Hidden Barriers: Cultivate Community for a Greater Experience of Belonging

Thinking about global issues can feel far off and remote. It can seem unimportant when we have problems of our own and so many worthwhile things happening in our own worlds. We must learn to be intentional about connecting to and engaging with global efforts and more universal concerns as well as rewarding opportunities that connect us to our shared humanity.

It’s easy to overlook this point of connection to greater meaning and purpose. It seems far off and not very connected to the day-to-day enjoyment of our lives. But, in fact, studies show that awareness of the larger world around us and finding ways to connect our lives to the greater good, locally and globally, makes a tremendous difference in how we feel about our lives.

“It is important to tend the whole garden so that the entire system is nurtured and flourishes. Because we are all connected we must not overlook any aspect of the whole or the entire system will suffer. To connect to community, connect to the global community.” ~ Eve Willson

3 Practical Ways to Begin to Cultivate Community and Connection Globally

Cultivating and tending to the whole garden of our lives does take effort. How can we take practical steps to connect to the global community for a deeper, more fulfilling experience of community?

#1—Support humanitarian causes through your giving and involvement. Contribution to a larger cause has been shown to elevate the experience of belonging and connection to community. Explore ways you can join with others in your social circle to make a lasting difference for those in need around the globe.

#2—Open your heart and mind to others who are different than you. This might include people from other cultures who live in your neighborhood or those who come from different religious backgrounds or socio-economic conditions. Realize that we are all more alike than different.

#3—Connect through the universal languages of art, music, and laughter. In October, True Center will host a session of Laughter Yoga. Also consider local offerings, from music performances to art shows or theater performance.

Be sure to join us for the kick-off Community Conversation and free pizza lunch on October 2 to discuss more ways to cultivate connections to community.
