Centering Practices for Challenging Times

Fear. Unrest. Confusion. So many of us have been feeling the effects of challenging and uncertain times. Read True Center’s statement on current events.

As we continue to experience a rapidly changing world and events that feel chaotic and unpredictable, a variety of feelings and emotions can rise up to the surface. Even where we might label them as negative or unwanted, these feelings are valid and can ultimately support us in returning to our true center.

Maintaining a strong connection to your True Self is so important. It is one way each of us can be a part of creating a community that is wholly connected. In this article we’ll explore centering practices that will support you in returning to your true center and in reclaiming your true voice.

Anchoring in True Peace

With so much in flux and even in turmoil, finding inner peace and serenity has never been a more important skill to hone. So how do we find harmony and peace? The key is to learn to connect to your inner wisdom and guidance. If you have not been immersed in this way of being, it can seem difficult at first. However, there are simple ways to connect with and anchor in an inner peace that is always accessible to you.

Practice Presence. To enhance your connection with your True Self, create a space in your home or in nature where you can ground in this moment and bring your full attention to your inner world. When you bring your attention to the present moment, it is impossible to worry about the past or fear the future. Breathe deeply. Experience what is in your immediate environment through your five senses. Connect with the natural world and use gratitude to anchor to the truth of what is well with you and your world right now.

Not only does this centering practice, which can really be done anywhere at any time, connect you to your True Self, it also opens the door to greater self-care and self-compassion which will help steady the ship in a time when we are experiencing the waves of change in our families, communities and world.

Connecting to Your True Self

There are so many ways to deepen awareness and connection to who you truly are. We’ll focus on one idea related to body, mind, heart and spirit. Use these centering practices to return to your true center and connect intentionally to your True Self:

➡ BODY BASICS. Free movement. Put on music that inspires you and move your body without interference from the judgment of your mind. Physical movement has many benefits, including stress relief, physical exercise, the release of positive chemicals and helping you to move beyond the limitations of circular thoughts and stuck emotions.

MIND OVER MATTER. Mindful Moments. Find ways to practice mindfulness that feel good to you. Whether you practice meditation or yoga, sit down to enjoy a good book or go for a walk in the woods, give your mind a break from all the things that seem to be “the matter” (problems to be solved and things that need fixing, for example) and dedicate time regularly to focus your mind on something positive.

HEART CONNECTION. Go to Gratitude. Be present to all that arises, knowing it is ultimately a gift. While it is important not to minimize what is difficult, it is equally important to find gems of gratitude. Where can you bring your presence to that which keeps you wholly connected? Take your focus in the moment on things for which you are grateful a step further by creating a daily gratitude practice. This can take the form of journaling, a quick list of 3 or 4 things each morning or evening or a practice of sending a few thank you notes or e-mails to people and groups that have brought joy and meaning to your life.

AWE AND WONDER. Notice the New. When the world seems heavy, get curious. Whether you practice a traditional religion, consider yourself spiritual but not religious or have no particular set of beliefs, be intentional about opening yourself up to new experiences. With a renewed sense of wonder, become present to all that is unfolding that is connected to wholeness. What is awe-inspiring to you? Simply be open to receiving. You may wish to keep a record of what you begin to notice.

Expressing Your True Voice

As you connect with your True Self, you will become more aware of a desire to express your authentic truth in the world. You do so by reclaiming and using your True Voice, through verbal or written expression and, most importantly, through aligned action. At True Center, this is what we mean when we use the phrase “love in action.” A connection with the truth of who you are will lead you to meaningful actions that spring from the heart.

Find Your True Voice. One way to safely begin to connect with and express your true voice is through creativity. Schedule a complimentary coaching session with True Center founder Eve Willson to reclaim your true voice and explore ways to express your true voice in the world.
